Creating departments and strong teams

I can help define (or redefine) the role of innovation and design within organizations to build efficient, consumer-oriented departments with a strong commercial focus. This involves setting strategic goals, performance indicators, work processes, team profiles, budgets, and, crucially, recruiting and developing top talent.  My approach prioritizes assembling agile, multidisciplinary teams capable of addressing diverse challenges.

I don't aim for a cultural change, but rather a cultural update, infusing competencies in innovation culture, design methods, and customer experience into the development of people, teams, and organizations. Whether working with C-leves, boards or analysts, I always strive to move beyond theoretical models or motivational speeches, engaging in real business challenges through hands-on experiences.

In my career journey, I've discovered that successful teams are built on a foundation of transparency, accountability, teamwork, and a collective sense of ownership. To this end, I've developed a leadership approach centered on six core principles.

 

This approach involves actively recruiting individuals with diverse skills and backgrounds, providing them with the necessary tools and support to thrive, and empowering them to reach their fullest potential.

User obsession

In order to drive innovation and change, the most powerful input is customer voice. Learning from what their needs and expectations are allows us to create seamless solutions and great experiences that drive results. I use business drivers, market data and benchmarks as guidelines to the design process but the work is always user-centered. Not only customers, but allies.

Optimal impact

Guiding teams towards prioritizing initiatives can be challenging. Even more challenging is breaking down silos and fostering synergy and common goals between different departments. Therefore, I always prioritize discussing the search for the maximum feasible impact, aiming to emphasize the overall value created for both customers and the business, rather than focusing solely on internal goals. I believe this mindset can be present both in high level strategies and in tactical design decisions.

I value openness, transparency, and candor. I strive to create spaces with psychological safety, so the team can provide and seek feedback on a regular basis, talking openly to express concerns, give opinions and propose new solutions. I set clear expectations and hold myself and the team to them.

Ownership and accountability

Granting autonomy while requiring accountability is essential for a high-performance team. I am always available to support the team, providing the tools, guidance, feedback, and training they need to succeed. At the same time, I trust the team to manage their time and tasks, while ensuring proper credit attribution and fair distribution of challenges based on seniority.

Collaboration

A team is stronger when it collaborates and works together, not only among designers but also with individuals from different disciplines and departments. This diversity enriches the decision-making process by integrating a range of experiences and perspectives. As a result, solutions are owned by multiple stakeholders, enhancing the chances of success.

Explore, experiment, excel

Exceptional experiences are born out of exploration rather than settling for the initial idea. I encourage the team to present multiple options when proposing ideas, except when a clear business justification supports a singular direction. My approach values experimentation and critical inquiry, fostering challenges within the team to ensure optimal solutions. Even if a challenge doesn't yield the desired outcome, we commit to decisions and move forward. It's crucial to question, be curious, and continuously learn.

How I've driven results

Generated USD 3.7 million by establishing an innovation area for Hapvida and leading seven diverse projects from strategy development to implementation;

Led the design team at Nuvemshop in implementing two new features, contributing to the generation of USD 20 million in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) per year;

Built a USD 3 million account by successfully resolving a critical project and leading five others as Innovation Manager at MJV Innovation;

Directly supervised over 30 individual contributors, guiding many into their advancement to roles such as design managers, senior staff designers, and design leads;

Doubled the design pace at Nuvemshop by reorganizing the team and work processes;

Led media exposure and established Investor Relations connections with the Brazilian market through open innovation initiatives.
